The Waltz of The Big Black Smith
The Waltz of The Big Black Smith dives into the (Danish) heritage of folk music and the traditions, norms, and the conventions it stands on. How would a contemporary dancer and a folk musician play with these traditions today? How can we move towards new aesthetics and ideas of genre mix?
The work was structured like an album: Consisting of nine pieces of songs and performative interventions, we play, improvise, dance, and merge our competences in order to test and expand the
range of where folk music and dance traditions of today are and potentially
could be.
It was the final work of performance artist Nicolaj Wamberg’s MA project graduating from the Norwegian Theatre Academy in 2022. Throughout the process we got feedback and support by performance artist Morten Liene and choreographer Janne-Camilla Lyster.
