Ida Catrin Utvik / Lærke Bang Barfod

In A Purple World of Strange Things two creatures are unfolding a colorful universe of textures, materials, fabrics, and other elements that serve different sensorial and tactile purposes. It is a piece made in close collaboration between choreographer Ida Catrin Utvik and costume designer/scenographer Lærke Bang Barfod.

The work explores how objects – whose design is highly inspired by fashion design objects such as bags, hats, and skirts, but with a slightly abnormal twist – meet the bodies and how the components are interacting with each other. It is the contact point between the two creatures and the materials that is central in A Purple World of Strange Things; how objects shape the body and its movements and vice versa. It doesn’t follow a story line as such, but rather, it unpacks several potential ways to move under, next to and together with the objects which creates a mysterious, cozy, and peculiar universe. The target group is kids between 3-6 years and their adults.

It was developed during Lærke Bang Barfod’s MA in Costume Design at KHiO in 2022, afterwards presented at Prague Quadriennale, Bærum Kulturhus and Kloden Theatre in Norway 2024.
